Here’s a workflow timelapse creating this Fisherman’s House. Feel free to download the original Blender file.

About This Project
This rustic fisherman’s cottage was created as a low-poly game asset featuring:
- Wooden structure: Planks, beams, and roof tiles
- Weathered details: Cracks, moss patches, worn textures
- Interior elements: Fishing nets, barrels, lanterns
- Natural surroundings: Rocks, water edge, vegetation
- Atmospheric lighting: Golden hour with volumetric fog
Modeling Workflow
Phase 1: Blockout (15 minutes)
- Create basic box shapes for walls and roof
- Set correct proportions using reference images
- Add simple pyramid roof shape
Phase 2: Detail Pass (45 minutes)
- Extrude individual planks from wall surfaces
- Model roof tiles using repeated geometry
- Add windows, door, and chimney details
- Create props: fishing nets, barrels, crates
Phase 3: Materials & Lighting (30 minutes)
- Apply vertex colors for wood variation
- Set up warm directional light for golden hour feel

Tips for Rustic Building Models
Weathering Techniques
Create aged, weathered looks without complex textures:
- Vertex painting: Paint darker colors on edges and corners
- Normal maps: Add subtle bumps for wood grain
- Displacement: Use simple noise for surface irregularities
Low-Poly Optimization
| Element | Target Polygons |
|---|---|
| Main building | 500-1000 tris |
| Roof tiles (each) | 4-8 tris |
| Window/door frame | 50-100 tris |
| Props (barrel, net) | 30-100 tris |
