Here’s a straightforward water shader setup for Blender 4.0 using the Cycles renderer. This tutorial creates realistic-looking water with reflections, refraction, and subtle surface details—perfect for game environments, architectural visualization, or any project needing convincing water surfaces.

⚠️ Note: This shader is optimized for Cycles. Eevee support requires additional setup due to its real-time rendering limitations.

Node Setup Overview

The water shader combines several key elements:

  1. Base color – Deep blue with slight green tint
  2. Roughness – Low value for smooth, reflective surface
  3. Normal map – Subtle wave distortion using noise texture
  4. Fresnel effect – More reflective at glancing angles
  5. Transmission – Light passes through water (refraction)

Step-by-Step Node Setup

1. Create the Base Material

  1. Select your water plane or mesh
  2. Go to the Shader Editor
  3. Create a new material and set it to Principled BSDF
